90s Hip Hop Speaker Upcycling Display: A Tribute to Hip Hop Culture

In honour of ’90s hip hop culture, our Creative Studios reception became home to a unique installation that embodied both nostalgia and sustainability. The Regenerate team was tasked with creating a show-stopping 2.5-metre-tall speaker box surrounded by smaller speakers, graffiti, vinyls and memorabilia – a tribute to the golden era of hip hop. The catch? Everything had to be made from reclaimed and recycled materials.

Our approach was inspired by the DIY ethos of hip hop culture. We used low-tech, laser-cut patterns to craft the main speaker box and smaller speaker props. These patterns were cleverly layered and spray-painted to create an eye-popping 3D effect, giving the illusion of authentic ’90s-style boom boxes. The display was completed with hip hop graffiti and memorabilia, giving it the finishing touches needed to transport visitors back to the era of breakdancing and boom bap beats.

Sustainability was a core principle in the design. Every element of the display was made from upcycled materials – whether it was the reclaimed wood for the speaker frames or recycled cardboard for the graffiti elements. The installation perfectly balanced visual impact with our commitment to sustainability, demonstrating how reclaimed materials can be transformed into bold, creative displays.

This project highlights the Regenerate team’s ability to combine art, culture and eco-consciousness, reinforcing how upcycling can be at the heart of truly innovative displays.
