Pete: The Giant Robot Showcasing the Emergence of AI

Pete wasn’t just another display; he was a bold statement on the intersection of cutting-edge technology and sustainable design. The Linney Regenerate team was tasked with creating a striking 3-metre-tall robot that highlighted the emergence of AI image generation, and we approached this with the dual focus of innovation and environmental responsibility.

At the heart of Pete’s design was the vision of showcasing AI-driven creativity while using sustainable materials to embody our Repurpose arm’s mantra of 'sustainability as standard.' Instead of opting for traditional, less eco-friendly materials, the team used innovative, recyclable resources and construction techniques that align with our circular approach.

Pete’s core was crafted using interlocking engineered cardboard, a fully recyclable and sustainable material. This framework provided the strength needed to support the robot’s towering structure while staying true to our commitment to environmental responsibility. Over the cardboard skeleton, a skin of plaster of Paris - applied in a papier-mâché style - formed the robot’s outer shell. This eco-friendly plaster not only gave Pete a smooth, durable finish but also adhered to our ethos of using sustainable materials. To complete the design, we coated the robot with water-based, non-toxic paints, ensuring that every aspect of Pete's construction reflected our dedication to green practices.

Pete’s most eye-catching feature was a screen embedded in his face, designed to showcase real-time AI-generated images. This interactive element brought the project to life, allowing viewers to experience the power of AI creativity first-hand, while also demonstrating the harmonious balance between technology and sustainable design.

After making a strong impression in Linney’s Creative Studios reception area, Pete went on to steal the show at the Digital Innovation Show in Olympia, London. There, he became the centrepiece of the event, capturing the imagination of attendees and sparking conversations about the possibilities of AI and eco-friendly design.

Pete embodies the spirit of Linney Regenerate’s Repurpose arm – taking materials often overlooked and transforming them into something innovative, impactful and sustainable. His presence at the Digital Innovation Show not only represented the future of AI but also showcased how sustainability and innovation can go hand in hand in the world of design and creativity.
